Kittens are resourceful, endlessly curious and wonderfully playful. That same curiosity means it pays to keep a close eye on them during their first weeks in a new home — a little preparation makes the move smooth and safe.
Kitten-proofing the house
Before your kitten arrives, look at your home from their point of view — about fifteen centimetres off the floor. Tuck away loose cables, secure wobbly objects, remove toxic houseplants, keep cleaning products behind closed doors, and check that windows and balconies are safe. Kittens can squeeze into surprisingly small gaps.
A calm first few days
Start your kitten in one quiet room with food, water, a litter tray and a cosy bed, then let them widen their territory at their own pace. A familiar-smelling blanket and a predictable routine help a newcomer feel secure far faster than a big, busy welcome.
Play, scratch, rest
Provide a sturdy scratching post, a few engaging toys and a high perch with a view. Daily play burns energy, builds confidence and strengthens your bond. Equally important is undisturbed rest — kittens sleep a great deal, and that sleep is when they grow.
Patience pays off
Give your kitten time, gentle handling and consistent routines, and you will be rewarded with a confident, affectionate cat who is truly at home with you.
